Deceitful Hearts

And the Valentine's theme continues...not purposefully...just reading what God is showing and seeing what He has to say.

The heart is hopelessly dark and deceitful, a puzzle that no one can figure out.  But I, GOD, serach the heart and examine the mind.  I get to the heart of the human. I get to the root of things.  I treat them as they really are, not as they pretend to be.  Jeremiah 17:10.

According to this verse, to be lead by our heart is a dangerous thing.  It is not full of light, showing you the way.  In fact it fools and tricks you.  Why is that?  Don't people recommend to follow your heart.  According to this verse that would be a foolish thing to do.  For one, the sin nature is there, making your feelings selfish and biased.  The other problem is the heart only knows one perspective: yours.  It doesn't have the benefit of eternal existence, holy thinking, and all knowledge like God's guidance.  To us it's an unsolvable puzzle.

So God comes in as the expert heart inspector.  He knows which areas need remodeling or demolition.  But the assessment is always to save and preserve the heart.  He is the only one that can find the cause of the brokenness and has a plan to fix it as He can see things as they really are and not as they pretend to be.

So how does it change your faith to know that the human heart in every person is bent toward pretending?

For one your own heart is.  The way you act and think on your own is mostly self preservation.  To use the house analogy above you try to fix things in your own life by covering up the mold, while God intends to rebuild that wall.  It makes the most sense to give yourself to His work than to keep covering it up.

Not only your own heart hides, but those around you do as well.  Have you ever stopped yourself from sharing your faith because someone looks like they have it all together.  They are pretending.  Without God no heart is right.  Don't let the appearance of things stop you from doing what your spiritual eyes are telling you.
