Hebrews 11:1-3
Key Verses: “Now
faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”
Hebrews 11:1
Journal Prompt: The notions of “leaps of faith” or “blind
faith” are prevalent in culture. Do
you think there is such a thing?
·
Read Hebrews
11:1-3 multiple times. From these three
verses, what do you learn about faith?
If you were describing faith to a child, what would you say?
·
The author of
Hebrews concludes chapter 10 with the encouraging thought that “…we are not of
those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and
preserve their souls.” How does the
opening of chapter 11 describe such saving faith?
·
Break down the description
of faith found in Hebrews 1:1. What does
each mean to you?
o
Assurance : Why can we be sure of God’s promises?
o
Hope: In whom, are we to place our trust? Why do you have hope in Him?
o
Conviction: What proof has He given us?
o
Unseen: Why can
you be confident despite not having something tangible before you?
·
Where does faith
come from? See Romans 10:17; Ephesians 2:8-9; Hebrews 12:2
o
What part comes
from God?
o
What is your
part?
·
What is the
result of having faith? See Hebrews 11:2-3, 11:6
o
How has having
faith changed you?
o
What rewards have
you been given from having such faith?
·
Does it matter
the size of your faith to God? Why or why not?
Look to what Jesus says about it in Matthew 17:20 to help guide your
answer.
·
Faith is not this
vague, intangible thing that someone may or may not have. Instead, it is solid and concrete. It is having confident trust in the living, eternal God who has revealed Himself
to us through the Word and His Son, Jesus and knowing that His promises will always come true.
o
How has your
personal notion of faith changed after this study or listening to the sermon?
