John part 14-The Response to Jesus


Key Verse: And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die. So the crowd answered him, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?” So Jesus said to them, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.”

What would you do if you only had one week to live?  What things would you say?  Who would you spend time with?  In this chapter we get insight into what Jesus does His last week before His crucifixion.  This section contains the highs of His triumphal entry and the sorrow that follows and many still with hardened hearts do not believe who He is.  Do spiritual ups and downs sound like your faith? Despite all the pressure and stress Jesus was under, He remains faithful and does not shrink back from boldly proclaiming God’s truth about life. 

 

Read John 12:1-11

·         When does this event happen? 

·         Who are the three people in this section?  What are their reactions to who Christ is?

·         Read Matthew 26:6-13 and Mark 14:3-9.  What significance does Christ being anointed with nard have for what Christ has to face?

·         Why did the Pharisees want to kill Lazarus?

·         Journal prompt: Reflect further on Judas’s response to Jesus.  When are you tempted to put earthly things before worshipping Christ?

 

Read John 12:12-19

·         Read Zechariah 9:9 and Psalm 119:25-26.  How do these Old Testament prophesies point to who Jesus is?

·         Journal Prompt: Reread verse 16.  When have you ever been in a situation where you didn’t understand what God was doing until later?

 

Read John 12:20-50

·         Journal Prompt: What does Jesus say our attitude towards life must be if we serve Him?  Do you embody that attitude?

·         How did Jesus feel at this point in His ministry?

·         What were the three reasons people did not confess Jesus was the Messiah?
 

·         If someone doesn’t accept Jesus, who are they also rejecting?  Based on that answer, how does this passage help you explain to people that Jesus is the only way to God

Study Introduction: Developing a Ministry of Reconciliation

My husband and I finished a four-year process of home building this last February.   Throughout the process we had paperwork, permits, receipts, product manuals, samples of materials, and even some tools and parts left by the sub-contractors that looked important.   So we kept them all.   We put them in a box.   People that know me well know that I love efficiency and organization.   But for this I just needed a box.   A place to put all this stuff that I know I’m supposed to have but don’t have time to deal with.   Stuff that is probably important, but thrown in none-the-less.   It gives me comfort to know at any time I can dig around in this box and find what I need when I need it. Devotional: Balance

This should be your ambition: to live a quiet life -1 Thess 4:11 I thought I’d mix things up and share something I’ve been learning a lot about lately: balance.   This verse above has been in my head quite a lot as I’ve been feeling different demands start to pull on me.   All of us have so many different responsibilities and interests that take our time; from family life and work, to hobbies and social events.   It seems like the calendar in my house is often running the show.   In this chapter Paul is writing about how Christians should live.   The word ambition means to be fond of honor, strive to bring something to pass and make a certain state your aim.   Then a few words later Paul then describes the tone of our day-to-day life as quiet.   This doesn’t mean you should be shy or a doormat, but to rest, cease from labor, not to be running around, to say nothing and hold one’s peace (this is my constant need!).   A friend once shared that you ...
