Job part 12- Stand in Wonder
I’ve typed this introduction a few times now. It is a humbling thing to find just the right words to prepare one to read God’s response to Job. Since my words are inadequate, I’ll use His:
Listen to this, stand
and consider the wonders of God. Do you
know how God establishes them? (Job 37:14,15 NASV)
We cannot imagine the
power of the Almighty; even though He is just and righteous, He does not
destroy us (Job 37:23 NLT)
But to man He said,
Behold the reverential and worshipful fear of the Lord—this is Wisdom (Job
28:28 Amplified)
I know through my study of this book, God has opened my eyes
through His Spirit to behold His majesty.
Reading through these next chapters, I am praying that you will catch a
glimpse of it too. For when we witness a
piece of God with our frail human eyes, suffering and seeming injustices fade
away. When we worship Him, we are free
live in the truth that all we are promised is God and that is enough. I feel like this week my role is not to help
you study the Bible but to guide you in an encounter with the living God.
Read Chapters 38-40.
This section will fall into three parts:
1. Ask yourself the following
questions as you read the first time:
Where does God answer Job from?
In chapter 40, what is Job’s
initial response to God’s first remarks?
2. Read these three chapters daily
and meditate on the greatness of God.
Listen to worship music that magnifies His glory. Pray aloud the things
you read that fill you with wonder. Make
a list in your notebook of the things He says about His power that fill you
with reverence. Find time this week to
be still before Him and let Him show you who He is. I believe that coming to Him for who He says
He is will put your heart at rest from all the reasons that you came to this
study in the first place.
3. Journal Prompt: Now that you meditated on God’s greatness,
are you at a place like Job where you realize you have nothing you can say to
Him that He doesn’t already know? Where
are you at with suffering now that we are nearing the end of the book? Has meditating this week about God’s
greatness changed your heart at all? If you can’t get a sense of His majesty,
what is holding you back? Maybe you’ve
closed your heart to Him for fear of pain, but remember we’ve learned that
fearing Him is the only safe road. Maybe
you don’t know Him because the Spirit of God isn’t in you because you aren’t a
Christian? If you desire a real
relationship, ask God to allow your heart to trust Jesus, confessing and
trading your sin for His perfection and find life in Him. Maybe you do know Him but have walked away;
maybe you’re trading an outward show of faith for inward renewal. Tell Him where you are and how you feel. Job is our example in this, always expressing
His real feelings. Next week we will
find out what God thinks about Job, his friends, and how He acts towards Job at
the end of this trial.
