John part 2-Will You Follow Jesus?


When we feel far from God, has He left us, or have we left Him?  Consider Romans 8:38-39 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.



Will You Follow Jesus?

·         Read John 1:19-51

·         In verse 19 we read that this section of scripture includes the testimony of John the Baptist. What two questions did the Pharisees ask John?  Who did John the Baptist say he was and what he was there to do? Why did John think Jesus was God?

·         Find all the other names for Jesus in this passage.  You should find six other titles for Jesus in this section.

·         Pick one name and use your cross references to find out more about that name in Scripture.  In most every bible you will see small dark letters on the side or underneath the scripture you are reading.  Usually there are letters to show which part of the verse is being referenced. For example in my Bible, the title Lamb of God appears in verse 29 and has a letter “a” before the phrase, so I look under the small 29 and look up the verses listed after “a.” After you read each verse, make notes on what you learn about Jesus in regards to that name.

·         Verses 35-51 describe Jesus calling men to follow Him.  What are the names of the three men that followed Jesus?  What was the process like for each one? Match each man with the following descriptors: doubted, pursued Jesus and told others, brought to Jesus.  Which man do you identify with in your own story of coming to Him?

·         Consider picking one or both of the journal prompts in step three below to reflect on this week’s scripture. 


·         John the Baptizer gives his testimony.  He was sure of who he was and who God was.  He was willing to share that with anyone that wanted to know.  Are you willing to share that with anyone?  Do you know the answers to those questions?  Is there someone God specifically wants you to share with and will you?
·         Jesus calls men to Himself to follow Him.  In this culture you didn’t go to a teacher to learn knowledge, but a way of life?  Are you following Christ and learning how to live life through Him?  Are you willing to follow Him anywhere and live any way He commands?  Is there a certain area of your life He is asking you to submit to Him and what will you do about it?

Study Introduction: Developing a Ministry of Reconciliation

My husband and I finished a four-year process of home building this last February.   Throughout the process we had paperwork, permits, receipts, product manuals, samples of materials, and even some tools and parts left by the sub-contractors that looked important.   So we kept them all.   We put them in a box.   People that know me well know that I love efficiency and organization.   But for this I just needed a box.   A place to put all this stuff that I know I’m supposed to have but don’t have time to deal with.   Stuff that is probably important, but thrown in none-the-less.   It gives me comfort to know at any time I can dig around in this box and find what I need when I need it. Devotional: Balance

This should be your ambition: to live a quiet life -1 Thess 4:11 I thought I’d mix things up and share something I’ve been learning a lot about lately: balance.   This verse above has been in my head quite a lot as I’ve been feeling different demands start to pull on me.   All of us have so many different responsibilities and interests that take our time; from family life and work, to hobbies and social events.   It seems like the calendar in my house is often running the show.   In this chapter Paul is writing about how Christians should live.   The word ambition means to be fond of honor, strive to bring something to pass and make a certain state your aim.   Then a few words later Paul then describes the tone of our day-to-day life as quiet.   This doesn’t mean you should be shy or a doormat, but to rest, cease from labor, not to be running around, to say nothing and hold one’s peace (this is my constant need!).   A friend once shared that you ...
