  Have you ever taken an on-line class?   For my teaching credentials I’ve had to take several.   In some ways I think of this letter to the church at Colossae as distance learning; this church had never met Paul face to face, he has a big charge-to teach them how to guard themselves about false teachers.   Just like we put faith in the credentials of an institution of learning, this church had to rely on the truth of Paul’s message through their relationship with Epaphras.   The message Paul sends them, as he has heard of the lies the enemy has tried to put into their new faith, are still in need of guarding against today.   As the chapter opens, we see again that the way of God are mysterious.   Only knowing God’s word through the Bible can we discern what is true in what people tell us.       Key verse: Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the f...

Colossians Chapter 1 God’s Will, His Truth, and What He Has Done For You   False teachers were denying Jesus was the son of God in the city of Colossae.   When Paul heard about it, he wrote to this small church (that he had never been to) to counter the lies and arm the church with knowledge about Christ so that they could counterattack.   By studying his letter, you too can equip yourself with knowledge of God and fight any lies spread about Him.   For the only protection we have against such lies is knowing the truth about Him.     Key Verse:   “To them [God’s saints], God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.”   Col. 1:27   Read Colossians 1:1-14 ·          From this section, what do you learn about the church in Colossae?   What is Paul’s relationship to the church? ...

How would you answer if you were asked, “what is the most important thing in your life?”   Would you say your family, your job, your house?   Would you say Christ?   Would you be willing to let go of each of those things in the first list for Him?   Paul was the utmost Jew.   He came from a prominent family.   He followed all of the laws.   He had a zeal and righteousness for his religion that matched few individuals.   Yet, when called by God, he left everything for Him.   He counted his former life as a loss simply for the prize of knowing Christ.   Could you say the same?   Key Verses:   “But whatever things were gain to me those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ.   More than that I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ.”   Philippi...

This week brings us to an uncomfortable place for many, our attitude.   It is so easy to see the faults in how others act and painful to look at ourselves.   Though it may smart a little, scripture is God’s loving way to show us who we really our and how He wants us to become more like Christ.   By studying the attitude of Jesus and other godly men known to the Philippian church, He can shave off our rough edges and gives us a heart that most reflects His.   Key Verse: Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Lord Father.   I thank you for the women beginning this study of Philippians.   I pray that, through this letter of encouragement, their love for You will grow and that they will be confident that every suffering, every disappointment, every trial they encounter is nothing compared to the surpassing joy of what it means to know You.   I pray that they will also learn what it means to stand firm in their faith in You and the comfort they can have in knowing that You have called them to righteousness through Your son Jesus Christ.   Thank you, Lord, for these women.
