Hebrews 9:15-18

Key Verse:     So Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him
                                                                                                                    Hebrews 9:28
Study Questions:

·         Whenever you see a therefore or other term of conclusion in scripture, stop to summarize what the main idea is preceding the verse.  Look at Hebrews 9:15, 18, 23 and identify the argument made before each of these verses.

·         Hebrews 9:16-17 seem to interject a concept that is not addressed in the rest of this passage.  Why mention a will?  Look carefully at Hebrews 9:15.  What promise does Jesus mediate? Looking at verses 15-17 as a whole, why did Jesus have to die?

·         Hebrews 9:18-23 discuss the necessity of blood to inaugurate the covenants and purify the people.  Read these verses and take notes on what blood was used for and why.  Now read Hebrews 9:22 and Leviticus 17:11.  Why is blood necessary as a sacrifice for sins?

·         God desires better sacrifices than the blood of calves and goats as it was impossible for that to take away sins (Hebrews 10:4).  In fact, Hebrews 9:23 explains that the heavenly sacrifice required something better that that of the first covenant.    Read 1 Samuel 15:22, Psalm 51:16-17, Proverbs 21:3, Hosea 6:6 and Mathew 9:13.  What sacrifices please God?  Are there any He is personally calling you to offer Him?

·         When Christ returns He will not deal with sin.  Why?  See Hebrews 10:14.  Since His sacrifice has already dealt with sin once for all, the time to deal with ours is today (Hebrews 4:7).  How do you deal with it?  Do you ignore it, deny it, or numb the guilt of it with religious activities? Do you embrace it, living for temporary pleasures that ultimately bring pain, or exchange it for righteousness by giving it to Jesus?  What has been your experience with sin if you chose something other than giving it to Jesus?

·         Hebrews 9:28 reminds us that Jesus is coming again.  Read Titus 2:11-14 and Isaiah 25:9.  Do you wait eagerly for Christ? How would having that attitude daily change the way you live?
