Psalms part 3: chapters 18-21

In whom do you trust?  If you wonder, ask yourself where you turn when life becomes stressful or you feel threatened.  Do you eat?  Do you work hard to avoid pain?  Do you try to make all things perfect in your life and never fail so you can stay safe? Do you lean on others’ sympathy, advice, or help instead of turning to God?  Do you rely on money to bail you out or to buy things to distract you when you are hurting?  As you study these psalms, find ways that God is more worthy and powerful and truly able to save other than the false things that you put your hope in.

Key Verse:          I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised,

and I am saved from my enemies.

(Psalm 18:3 ESV)

Psalm 18

·         Read through the entire Psalm.  Then read 2 Samuel 22 and compare the message of both.  How are they similar?

·         What did God do for David? Does He do the same for you?

·         How did David respond to God’s work in His life?  Have you responded in that way?

Psalm 19

·         This psalm is the first time Redeemer is used in the Psalms.  Do you know what a Redeemer is?  What does the Psalm tell us about this title?

·         Compare verses 1-6 to Romans 1:18-20.

·         This psalm shows how God communicates with man.  How does He do it in verses 1-6.  How does He speak to us in verses 7-10?

·         Whenever I read Psalm 19:3 my heart starts singing this song:

Halleluiah by Chris Rice.

If you choose to listen to it, I hope it blesses you and the Lord as you might reflect on the way creation magnifies Him this week…

Psalm 20

·         Make a list of everything David asks the Lord to do.  Hint: these requests usually start with “may.”

·         Where is David’s confidence?

Psalm 21

·         After reading this Psalm, compare the first verse to Psalm 20:6-9.  Which idea connects the two sections?

·         Make a list of what you learn about God

Journal prompt: Take the week’s challenge to heart.  Now that you’ve studied about God’s character and worthiness, ask yourself again if you trust in God the way David did?  If not, pray that God would open up your heart to trust Him more.
