Hebrews 11:4-7

Hebrews 11:4-7

Key Verse:  And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for whoever would draw near to God must
believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him. Hebrews 11:6

Open: Who is your favorite person from the Bible? or Which person from the Bible do you
most relate to?

Start by reading Hebrews 11:6. As you study and talk about the three men of faith below, keep
Hebrews 11:6 in mind. How do its three main principles apply to these men? How do they
apply to you?

Abel

  •  Read Hebrews 11:4, Genesis 4:1-16, Matthew 23:35 and 1 John 3:12. From these passages, what do you learn about Abel?
  • Why was Abel’s sacrifice of a lamb “more acceptable” to God than Cain’s?
  • How does Abel’s sacrifice foreshadow that of Christ’s?
  • In what ways did God commend Abel? Why?
  • Even though Abel died thousands of years ago, because of his faith, the Bible tells us he still speaks. How does Abel’s story of faith speak to you? How do you want your story of faith to speak to others?

Enoch

  •  Read Hebrews 11:5 and Genesis 5:21-24. From these passages, what do you learn about Enoch?  Enoch was commended as having pleased God because he “walked with God.” (Hebrews 11:5). Read Micah 6:8 and Malachi 2:5-6. From these passages and Hebrews 11:6, where does pleasing God begin? What does walking with Him entail?
  •  Make a list of all of the elements of what it means to walk faithfully with God. How can you put these principles into practice and thus draw nearer to Him?
Noah
  •  Read Hebrews 11:7 and Genesis 6:8 through chapter 9. What do you learn about Noah’s faith and his character from these passages?
  • Why was Noah and his family saved from God’s wrath? What was the key element of their salvation
  • Noah was rewarded for his faith – for believing and obeying God even in the unseen. What is God calling you to do even when the actual events or outcome is unseen? Are you obeying Him?
  • What does it mean for Noah to become an “heir of righteousness”? When you think about becoming an heir with Christ, what does that mean to you?
