Hebrews 9:1-14

Blog readers,
I know it's been a long time since our last post.  If you remember our bible study was going to be working along with the church we attend and my study partner Callie and I were not writing studies.  Recently our pastor asked us to write the studies for the church, which is a great honor and responsibility, so we will be publishing our work here.  We apologize for starting midway but if you'd like to start from the beginning, this link will get you back to study guides for the first 8 chapters of Hebrews written by our pastor.

Hebrews 9:1-14

Introduction: These questions are meant for both individual study and for the life groups to go through together. Take the time to answer the questions for yourself first; then at life group challenge each other with your answers and discussion.

Key Scripture Verse: “If the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer sanctify for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God?” Hebrews 9:13-14

Read Hebrews 9:1-14, preferably out loud. How does this passage capture everything we have learned in Hebrews so far?

As we learned from last week, the tabernacle and the priests “serve[d] a copy and shadow of the heavenly things.” They were made according to a “pattern” set by God. See Hebrews 8:5. What purpose did each of the items listed in Hebrews 9:1-10 serve? What do you think they symbolized?
       o Holy Place
                 The Tent (Ex. 26:1-36)
                 The Lamp Stand (Ex. 25:31-39)
                 The Table (Ex. 25:23-29)
Bread of the Presence (Ex. 25:30, Lev. 24:5-9)
                 Levitical Priests (Ex. 25:30, 30:7-8, Num. 28:1-8, Heb. 6)
o The Veil, i.e. the Second Curtain (Ex. 26:31-33)
      o Most Holy Place
                 Golden Alter (Lev. 16:12-13)
Ark of the Covenant (Ex. 25:10-16, 37:1-9)
                 Golden Urn (Ex. 16:33-34)
                 Aaron’s Staff (Num. 17:1-11)
Tablets of the Covenant (Ex. 25:16, 34:1-4, 40:20)
                 Cherubim of Glory (Ex. 25:18-22)
Mercy Seat (Ex. 25:17-22, Num. 7:89)
                 High Priest (Lev. 16:6-22)

According to Hebrews 9:8-10, what were the limitations of these items? Why were they not enough to open the way for everyone to enter into the “holy places”?

How does Christ’s service and sacrifice compare with those of the Levitical priests? What did His blood accomplish that the offerings and sacrifices of the priests could never accomplish?

Jesus willingly offered Himself so that believers could be purified and enter the Most Holy Place in order to “serve the living God.” Hebrews 9:14. What does that mean to you personally? How can you express your gratitude and thanksgiving for Christ’s sacrifice through service to Him?
