Psalms part 5: chapters 28-34

“God’s anger is but for a moment, His favor is for a lifetime; Weeping may last for the night, But a shout of joy comes in the morning.”  Psalm 30:5

“How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, Whose sin is covered!  How blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute iniquity, And in whose spirit there is no decent!”  Psalm 32:1-2

Like David in these verses we too can be confident that, no matter how bad we screw up, God’s love for us is boundless and His capacity to forgive unlimited!  We only have to recognize our sin, confess, and ask for forgiveness.  God is faithful and righteous to forgive.  1 John 1:9

·         Compare and contrast Psalms 28 and 29.  What is the main idea of each psalm?

·         Read Psalm 30.  List all of the things David is thankful for.  Are you thankful for any of the same things?  Has there been a time in your life that has paralleled the mourning, weeping and rejoicing that David mentions?

·         Read Psalm 31

o   What does this psalm teach you about God’s character and His ways?

o   What attributes of God does David appeal to for help?

o   When things aren’t going well, do you feel similar to how David feels in this psalm?  Do you trust God’s character?

·         Break Psalm 32 into three sections.

o   Verses 1 and 2:  How are these paragraphs related?

o   Verses 3-7:  Compare these to 1 John 1:9

o   Verses 8-11:  How do these paragraphs relate to the previous seven verses?

o   Can you relate to the way David felt before and after he confessed his sin?

·         Read Psalm 33

o   Make a list of all the ways this psalm tells you to praise the Lord.

o   Why should we praise Him?

o   What is the psalmist’s relationship to the Lord?  Do you have the same relationship?

·         Break Psalm 34 down paragraph by paragraph.  What is each paragraph’s theme?  How do they relate together?  What is the “fear of the Lord” as described by this psalm?  What does it offer those who do so?  How and where do we learn the fear of God?
