Psalms Study Guide 2:  Psalm 9 through 17

When nations are at war, God is there.  When the wicked seem to prosper, God is there.  When life is in chaos, God is there.  In every situation, God is there.  Our next nine psalms express the author’s grief over evil in the world.  Notice, however, the Psalmist’s comfort in knowing that in every situation God is there and knowing that He will judge the world to make all things rights.

Key Verse: “And those who know Your name will put their trust in You, For You, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You.”  Psalm 9:10

Read Psalm 9

·         Make note of the repeated phrase in the Psalm.  What does it say about the author’s feelings about God?

·         What truth about God does this psalm reflect?

Read Psalm 10

·         Why is the author crying out?  What is he asking of the Lord?

·         How do you relate?

Read Psalms 11 and 12

·         What do these Psalms say about the wicked and the righteous? What is their relationship to the Lord?

·         Compare what is said in Psalm 12 with James 3:1-12.  What do these verses say about our words and their impact?  Meditate on how you use your own mouth in comparison to these truths.

Read Psalms 13 and 14

·         Apply Psalm 13 to your life.  When do you cry out to the Lord?  What do you ask of Him?  Do you do so with the same trust as David in this psalm?

·         What is the central truth of Psalm 14?

Read Psalms 15 and 16

·         Focus on Psalm 15 – What is the key question that David asks?  List the answer point by point.

·         Focus on Psalm 16 – What does David ask of God?  What does it foretell about Christ’s resurrection?

Read Psalm 17

·         What does David ask of God for himself?  What does he ask of God for the wicked?

·         How does this psalm reflect David’s trust that God will answer justly?
